When you think of migraine headaches, the immediate thought is extreme pain, having to lie in a darkened room and basically not being able to function for a day or two. But did you know that not all migraines cause pain and that the symptoms are similar to a couple of very serious medical complaints.

A loss of peripheral vision in the left eye for forty minutes is no laughing matter. It was accompanied by a dull feeling in the head and later some nausea. The next day just a feeling of fatigue and dullness persisted.

For this to happen to someone for the first time can be confusing. For a medical professional to hear this it rings alarm bells. A CAT scan is required to rule out potential serious pathology. The most likely culprit is an Aneurysm. That is a type of stroke in which a small bleed occurs in the brain.

This kind of bleed can be minor and the person can recover fairly quickly with perhaps only a small loss of vision in the peripheral field, or it can kill or seriously disable in an instant.

The first symptom of this kind of stroke is a loss of peripheral vision! This kind of symptom must be properly investigated. It is too risky to simply be discounted as just a strange symptom. If an all clear is given on the CAT scan the diagnosis may well be that the loss of vision was a migraine.

Obviously not your run of the mill understood kind of migraine but a much rarer form. It has the loss of peripheral vision, a sense as if you are looking through water, mild headache, some nausea and a general feeling like jetlag.

This kind of migraine in many instances seems to be brought on by stress. Of course any kind of migraine can be triggered by stress as well.

The important thing is that a correct diagnosis is made. Do not assume because you know someone or because you have read this article that if you experience such an event that you can automatically self diagnose a migraine.

There are other conditions which also present such symptoms including Leukaemia One such episode killed a young healthy patient in just two weeks from the onset of loss of vision.

As with any migraine keep a record of activities including times of increased stress and dietary change. If you are under strong constant stress, you have to take steps to make changes otherwise you will suffer more frequently.

Some migraines do increase the risk of stroke so I would recommend a daily supplement of grape seed extract or Pcynogenol, a similar compound which is extracted from the marine pine bark. These compounds help to strengthen blood vessels.

I would like to introduce a precious breathing exercise for healing some of acute headaches and migraines instantly.

It is a very simple and effective technique of breathing and exercise and was developed by the famous Russian singer, Strelnikova. Subsequent medical research in Russia proved that it helps to recover from chronic asthma and respiratory allergies.

The method is very simple:

Stand in the straight position, bend your hands with elbows downward and palms watching forward. In this position, you will need to make 4 short, active loud inhales and at the same time grab the air and make a fist with both two hands.

Active, short and loud inhale through nose is followed by 4 passive silent exhales through the mouth at the same time relaxing fists and opening your palms.

After 4 inhales and exhales relax for 4-5 seconds then continue for another 4, and in total you will need to make 24 inhales and exhales.

Afterward give yourself some time to relax and assess your feelings, if your headache is still there, continue for another few inhales and exhales in the way I described earlier.

What people say:

“I had throbbing headache just before the important meeting, pain was so strong that I couldn’t concentrate on anything, I decided to try Strelnikova breathing and in few minutes my pain was gone…”

“I was considering taking a pain reliever for my headache, but I remembered reading this Strelnikova method. I decided to bear it for a few more minutes, surfed the net and followed these instructions. It worked remarkably well! I think there are still hidden gems yet to be discovered from medical research of the old Soviet Block countries.”

In certain cases, the excruciating pain from a migraine headache may continue for hours and possibly days.

The enlarging of a blood vessel and nerve fibers releasing chemicals that surround the blood vessels combine to cause migraines. Under the skin and just outside the skull, an artery is enlarged during a headache. This results in chemicals being released that lead to pain, inflammation, and the artery further enlarging. Females are at much greater risk of suffering from migraines, which can be attributed to fluctuations in the menstrual cycle, fluctuations of hormones during menopause, or taking birth control pills.

The sympathetic nervous system leads to nausea, vomiting, and occasionally diarrhea as a result of migraine headaches. The stomach emptying into the small intestine is delayed by the response of the sympathetic nervous system.

As a result, absorption is effected because the majority of it happens in the small intestine. This can cause some dangerous issues. Circulation of the blood is also limited from migraines, meaning extremities such as the feet and hands will not receive sufficient blood flow. Migraines also increase sensitivity to sound and light.

What Causes Migraines?

There is no exact ’cause’ that is known for migraines, but what is known is that certain events or substances can lead to them. These are referred to as ‘triggers’. While some sufferers of migraine headaches can identify fairly easily the triggers that result in headaches, the majority are not able to.

There are many triggers, including allergies and several allergic reactions. Bright lights, loud noises, certain perfumes and odors, as well as alcohol and tobacco are all additional triggers.

Migraine headaches are classified into various categories based on their symptoms. Currently, two types of migraines stand out as the most common: migraine with aura and migraine minus aura. Other types that are less prevalent include basilar artery, abdominal, and common migraine among others.

During or prior to a menstrual cycle, women will get migraines referred to as menstrual migraines, which may be associated changes in hormones. Migraines may appear during pregnancy the first time or when menopause has concluded. This is why women experiencing migraine headaches is more likely.

Migraines with aura can be described as a neurological phenomenon a person goes through approximately ten minutes to a half an hour before the onset of a headache. Many auras are characterized as shimmering or bright lights. Language abnormalities, motor weakness, vertigo, dizziness, and paresthesia of the tongue, extremities, and face are the no visual auras. The most common type is migraine with aura.

Additional Types

Children are most commonly diagnosed with abdominal migraine headaches who have a family history of it. Nausea, vomiting, and pain in the abdominals are some of the symptoms experienced. As children get older, they will begin to experience more typical migraines.

Carotidynia, also referred to as lower half headache, causes a deep, dull ache, and occasionally a sharp pain in the neck or jaw. Also, on top of the carotid artery in the neck is the presence of tenderness and swelling. A headache felt around or behind the eye associated with vomiting is the beginning of a ophthalmologic migraine. As the headache advances, the eyelids start to droop and the nerves that allow eye movement become paralyzed.
