Stains are caused by may different things such as tea, coffee, cigarettes, certain beverages and food.

There are many options to choose for when shopping for whitening kits. The time and length that is required for usage revolves around the specific product that is going to be used. Here are a few examples of those kits and and where they may be found.

Some people use the whitening trays. It consists of a gel placed into a customized tray that fits directly onto the teeth. Each brand has its own allotted amount of time the tray should be left on. Some of the systems say it is supposed be done for several days before seeing results, while others say it may take a few weeks. It all depends on the brand that is chosen. These kits can be found in a local pharmacy, grocery store or some department stores. They may also be purchased from a dental office.

Also available is a system called a bleaching pen. It was designed to be used for people who need to whiten their teeth while they are on the go. The gel in the pen is squeezed over the selected teeth to be whitened and results are seen after using it on a regular basis. These pens can be found online as well as a drug store, grocery store, department store and a dentists office.

Whitening strips are another alternative for whitening teeth. Strips are placed over the upper and lower rows of teeth. The whitening procedures are done at ones own pace because the longer the strips are kept on during each daily session the more they whiten. Results can been seen in days or weeks. Stores offer strips that stay in for a certain period of time daily and strips that dissolve in your mouth.

The length of time that any of the procedures lasts depends on the procedure that is used. Some last for a few months and other ones will last substantially longer according to what system is being used. Diet and hygiene will effect the length of time that teeth will stay white after using one of the products.

The goal when using teeth whitening kits is to achieve a maximal whitening effect for each individual. Some people just want a touch up while others are looking for a more dramatic effect. Whatever the case may be, there are options.

Laser teeth whitening is a procedure performed by a dentist in their office. When you choose professional dental services to whiten your teeth you first have to find a dentist with whom you are comfortable.

You will want to plan on being in the dentist’s office for at least an hour. If your teeth are stained quite badly, the treatment can take longer. It could also take more than one visit to the dentist to get the desired results. This again, depends on how badly your teeth are stained. The results are good and instant. But it can be quite expensive and cost hundreds of dollars per visit.

The number of future treatments required also depends on how much your teeth get stained after the first treatment. For example, for smokers, the whitening effect may not last as long as it does for non-smokers.

How does laser teeth whitening whiten your teeth? It is a very simple process. A bleaching gel will be applied to your teeth by the dentist. Before the gel is applied the dentist will clean your teeth to remove any plaque.

After the bleaching gel is applied, the dentist will use a laser to activate the gel. The light from the laser will cause a chemical reaction in the bleaching gel. This chemical reaction is what whitens your teeth enamel.

When you opt for laser treatments, your teeth will be noticeably whiter and brighter. Some side effects are associated with laser teeth whitening. The most common side effect is sensitivity to hot and cold liquids. After a few days this sensitivity will go away though.

What do you need to do after treatment? There are some steps that you will need to take to keep your teeth white for longer after your laser teeth whitening procedure. You will need to make sure that you eat or drink less of anything that can stain your teeth.

For example, you may want to drink white wine instead of red wine and grapefruit juice instead of cranberry juice. Dark colored foods and drinks can discolor your newly whitened teeth faster. Smoking and chewing tobacco can also cause your teeth to look yellow after you have had them whitened.

Results from laser teeth whitening last between 6 to 12 months. You will need to schedule an appointment with your dentist 4 to 6 months after your first procedure for maintenance. Touch ups may require 1-2 further applications.

Is there a cheaper alternative? There are many teeth whitening products available that you can use at home. The most well known are strips, trays, pens and powders. Out of these, the pen is the easiest, least messy and most convenient to use. Results may not be as good or as instant compared to laser treatments. They are a lot cheaper though.

If you’ve been wanting to enhance your smile, you may have also wondered how to choose a good cosmetic dentist for your needs. The answer is not as simple as you might hope, especially since the American Dental Association (ADA) doesn’t recognize “cosmetic dentistry” as a specialized field of practice for dentists. Similarly, most state dental boards (the licensing and regulatory bodies) don’t have special regulations that are unique to practicing as a cosmetic dentist. In other words, any general dentist can provide cosmetic dentistry services.

The education required to become a doctor of dental surgery (DDS) includes training on the discipline and many technologies associated with providing cosmetic dentistry services in a general way. Training programs in the 90’s and beyond are different from the ones in previous decades because of the growing demand for cosmetic dentistry services. Let’s turn to the five questions that can help you make a wise decision.

1. How much experience does the dentist have?
Dentists who truly have a focus on cosmetic dentistry typically offer these services:
-Veneers and cosmetic bonding
-Teeth whitening treatments
-Orthodontics, such as braces and aligners
-Bridges and crowns
-Composite tooth-colored fillings
-Dental implants

While looking at before and after photos can certainly be impressive, you should also specifically inquire about the depth of experience in any of the above areas that will be involved in your treatment plan. Functionality and oral health should never be compromised to achieve a great visual appearance. Learning to achieve all three comes not only from know-how, but also from extensive hands-on experience. How long has the prospective dentist been in practice? How many patients has he or she treated with the specific type of treatment that you will require?

2. How and where did your dentist get his or her experience?
As with any profession, mentoring and training at the hands of experts can have a huge influence on how well and how quickly you can become highly skilled as a cosmetic dentist.
-Begin by looking for a graduate of a nationally recognized dental school – one whose professors are certain to be familiar with the latest technology and are recognized for their expertise.
-Beyond the DDS education program, ask whether the dentist has had additional training from experts. Especially, look for experience in large university hospital settings that have departments of specialty related to dentistry and cosmetic enhancement. Those teams typically treat the most challenging cases, and hands-on experience gained there comes with the oversight of national experts. (These types of departments might specialize in craniofacial or dento-facial needs, or in orthodontics.)
-If you’re looking for a special type of service, such as Invisalign “invisible braces,” you should inquire about whether the cosmetic dentist has achieved preferred provider status – a designation that is based on having provided those specific services to a substantial number of patients.

3. Does the dentist provide sedation dentistry?
If you’ve ever experienced dental anxiety, have a hectic schedule, want quick results, or need extensive cosmetic dentistry procedures, you might want to look for a cosmetic dentist who is certified to perform sedation dentistry. It is sometimes possible to combine what might otherwise require two or three appointments into a single appointment by using sedation – without compromising your health or quality of the results. Not all states regulate the practice of sedation dentistry, although more states are starting to do so in order to ensure patient safety. There are also different levels of sedation dentistry. You can call your state dental board and find out if sedation dentistry is regulated, discuss different levels of sedation, and perhaps also obtain the names of dentists in your area who are certified.

4. How well does the proposed treatment plan suit you?
While it can be related to a lack of experience, some cosmetic dentists simply aren’t very flexible in what they offer. The result is that the proposed plan might not be the best one for you – from the standpoint of your oral health, your desired outcome, or your budget. A cosmetic dentist who is adept and experienced at cosmetic dentistry can strike a good balance between outcome and budget, without compromising your oral health. If you’re feeling discouraged because you were presented with a plan that was completely out of your budget (even with a payment plan), then don’t be afraid to look for another qualified cosmetic dentist. You don’t have to sacrifice quality in order to experience improvements in your smile. Continue to look for an experienced cosmetic dentist. Ask whether the dentist would be willing to work with you in devising a plan that suits your budget.

5. Does the cosmetic dentist offer flexible payment terms?
Do not be afraid to ask whether the cosmetic dentistry procedures you’re interested in are or are not covered by your specific insurance plan. Because many procedures performed today are elective, your dental insurance may not pay for the procedures you want. For that reason, you might want to also ask about available payment options, especially for more extensive treatment plans.

If your tooth is damaged and you are at risk of eventually losing it, then you may want to have it extracted and replace it with a denture. However, you may be wondering whether you go with a removable denture or a denture implant.

Having traditional dentures to replace a missing tooth is good idea, but why go with an option that gives your smile a sense of falseness. Often times, removable dentures have a false look about them. Everyone will be able to tell from your smile that you have a fake tooth.

Dentures have gained popularity because they are easily able to fill the gaps in a smile with a missing tooth. Now there are dental implants that not only look like real tooth, but also feel like real teeth. People tend to be much happier with dental implants over traditional dentures.

Denture implants are the most popular choice for those looking to replace teeth. This method involves implanting false teeth into the patient’s jaw using titanium parts. This will make the implants very rigid and sturdy.

Dental implants may cost more upfront than traditional denture, but traditional dentures can cost more in the long run. Typically, traditional dentures need constant adjustments and maintenance that can really cost you a lot of money. Implants are usually maintenance free.

Ask your dentist about implant. You might find that denture implants are the best option for you. They will look and feel natural in your mouth. Check your insurance policy to see if they cover dental implants.

Dental implants provide a safe and permanent solution to missing teeth. A good dental implant helps improve the functionality, comfort and look of your natural teeth.

A Dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is implanted to hold an artificial tooth or bridge. The implants normally consist of a titanium screw with either a rough or a smooth surface (titanium is strong yet at the same time light weight and resistant to corrosion). Once the root of an artificial tooth is implanted, a ceramic crown can be fixed over it. Later, this treatment and the crown become a permanent part of your teeth by fusing into the jawbone.
Dental implants have several advantages such as:

o It replaces a tooth without depending on the neighbouring teeth for support.
o Aesthetic effects of dental implants are far superior to conventional methods like dental bridges and dentures.
o It suits any adult regardless of the number of teeth missing.
o It avoids bone shrinkage that occurs after a tooth loss.
o A Dental implant looks and feels like the natural tooth.
o Success rate of dental implants is high.
o It adds to your confidence by enabling you to speak and eat without worries about your teeth.

The two common types of implants are:

o Endosteal Implants: This involves screws or cylinders or bones being placed into the jawbone surgically. Normally this kind of implant is used for patients with removable dentures or bridges.
o Subperiosteal implants: This implant suits people with minimal bone height and people who cannot wear conventional dentures. The implants are placed on the top part of the jaw.

The cost of a dental implant varies depending on various factors:

o Type of implant
o Number of teeth to be implanted
o Type of crown fitted to the implant
o Type of anaesthesia used before the implant

A dentist who provides a dental implant should mandatorily have adequate training and be aware of the legal requirements for practicing dental implants. The legal requirements for training in dental implants differ between countries.

Once the implant is accomplished you need to take proper care of your dental health and visit your dentist occasionally. Regular brushing and flossing is needed for dental implants too as much as natural teeth to make them clean and plaque-free.

Success rates of dental implants vary from patient to patient. Though there is an 80% chance for success, poor bone quality and healing capacity, smoking and diabetes can lead to a failure of the process. Hence, it is important that you diagnose your dental condition correctly before going for an implant. A good dental clinic and an experienced dentist can help you in this.

You will be surprised to learn the relationship between word recall and Alzheimer’s disease. Get out your pen, paper and stop watch. See how you do. Early testing for Alzheimer’s disease can have a huge impact. Catching it early has great benefits:

- Alzheimer’s take years to develop. People in the early stages can add to the decision making. They can understand the drug options. They can have some control over their treatment.

- The existing drugs work best in the early stages. This may slow damage to the brain.

- Future drugs and treatment options. They may be able to prevent permanent damage to the brain as Alzheimer’s advances.

As you can see, the sufferer can greatly improve their quality of life with this early knowledge. Through early testing for Alzheimer’s disease and treatment, they could have a better quality of life for longer. They can be there for their loved ones longer. They can possibly delay or eliminate the need for a nursing home. The duration of the burden to care givers may be eased.

Scientists have found a pattern of word loss in Alzheimer’s patients. This helps when testing for Alzheimer’s disease. It is very consistent. Researchers believe they can identify it by testing for Alzheimer’s disease through word loss alone. Patients will forget words they learned later in their lives. Words that they don’t use very often.

There was a recent study done with Alzheimer’s patients. They interviewed 96 people with the disease. Researchers also quizzed 40 healthy people. All were similar in age. They also had similar cultural and social backgrounds.

They were given the following simple word test. They stopped them after one minute. Here are the questions they answered:

- Name all of the animals you can think of.
- Name all of the fruit you can remember.

How many did you list for each?

Those with early Alzheimer’s listed 10 to 15 items in each list. The healthy group listed 20 to 25 items. We learn words at different ages. Dog and cat are usually learned before the age of 5. Take the word aardvark for another example. It is learned later and is used less often.

Those with early Alzheimer’s disease would tend to remember the words learned earlier in life. They would not think of words like aardvark, zebra, or giraffe. Do you feel concerned after taking this test and understanding the nature of the word loss? If so, I urge you to see a doctor for more testing. The earlier you are diagnosed, the better off you and your family will be.

They cannot tell the difference between cognitive dementia due to normal aging or Alzheimer’s. It’s possible that the part of the brain where this word loss occurs is the most affected in the early stages of Alzheimer’s.

Scientists need to do more testing on other degenerative brain diseases. They need to see if word loss is common in more than just Alzheimer’s. Testing for Alzheimer’s disease for early detection is a high priority for researchers. In the coming years, there will be more and better ways for testing for Alzheimer’s disease.

In the meantime, you can build up reserves in your brain. This will help you to try to outlive the onset of cognitive dementia. Cognitive dementia is the precursor to Alzheimer’s disease. Building up your brain makes neural pathways stronger. Harder to damage. Research shows keeping your brain active can delay cognitive dementia. Of course diet and exercise play a huge role.

It is not known yet what exactly triggers off the weakening of the brain cells. There are many factors which lead the growth of Alzheimer’s disease.

Causes of Alzheimer’s disease:

The chief factor in the growth of Alzheimer’s disease is age of the sufferer. The tendency of the growth of the disease is more once you cross the age of 65 and adds up every five years after 65 years of age. But this condition is not faced by older people alone. Alzheimer’s disease is genetic, but people even without a family history of Alzheimer’s also face this, but it is not as common as the ones with a genetic history.

In case of inherited Alzheimer’s the indications start showing earlier like starting from the age of 35 to 60 years of age. The tendency of developing Alzheimer’s is higher in case of the people suffering from Down’s syndrome. This is due to the presence of an additional copy of the ‘chromosome 21′, in which a protein which is also present in the brain of the people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

It is proven that people who have had head injuries or bad whiplashes are more prone to Alzheimer’s disease. It is also said that aluminium also causes Alzheimer’s disease.

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease:

Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is quite difficult as the indications are very analogous to many other conditions. None of the cases of Alzheimer’s are the same as every individual reacts differently to the condition. There are three stages of Alzheimer’s disease: mild, moderate and severe. In case of mild Alzheimer’s disease the symptoms would be forgetfulness, weak memory, getting confused, and difficulty in speech and mood swings.

This all occurs as a result of slow loss of the functioning of the brain. In case of moderate Alzheimer’s disease the symptoms are: delusions, repetitive behaviour, hallucinations, incontinence, imagining things which you haven’t done and disturbance in sleep. This person would even have problems in keeping a track of recent happening. A problem with speech and language can initiate at this is stage. This in turn would build frustrations and depression resulting in mood swings.

In case of severe Alzheimer’s the sufferer is highly disoriented and confused. At this stage the person tends to experience delusions and hallucinations. The delusions and hallucinations are worse in the night as the sufferer tends to get violent, suspicious and demanding with people around him.

The symptoms in case of severe Alzheimer’s are: loss in weight and appetite, difficulty in swallowing, loss of long and short term memory, highly prone to infection and difficulty in moving about. This is the stage when the sufferer needs to be completely taken care of as there can barely do anything by them.

Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease:

There is no cure of Alzheimer’s disease found as yet. But there is medication available which would aid in delaying the growth of the disease. These medications help by averting a chemical breakdown in the brain. As a result the weakening of the brain also slows down.

In Home Care

Providing home care for senior citizens with Alzheimer’s disease can be difficult. Symptoms progressively worsen, and predicting how quickly that progression will be or which behavioral changes will occur each day is impossible. Both the person with Alzheimer’s and the caregiver may have a hard time carrying out activities of daily life, such as eating, talking, sleeping, and coming up with activities to do. The following is a set of ideas that may help you deal with issues related to elder home care for people with Alzheimer’s.

Daily Activities

It may be challenging to think of activities that will be possible and interesting for a person with Alzheimer’s to do. Trying activities that build on present strengths and abilities is usually more successful than attempting to teach a new skill.

Try not to set your expectations too high. It may be best to do simple activities that employ current abilities.

Assist the person in starting the activity. Take the activity one step at a time, and praise the person each time he or she completes a step.

Take note of agitation or frustration with each activity. If you notice a negative change in mood, gently try to help him or her with the activity or subtly change to a new activity.

If you notice that the person enjoys a particular activity, try to make that activity a part of your schedule at a similar time each day.

Make use of adult day care centers, which provide activities and support for the person with Alzheimer’s along with relief from caregiver tasks. Often, meals and transportation are provided in the cost of using these centers.

Communicating with the person may be difficult-both understanding and being understood may become an issue. Try to use simple words and short sentences in a calm tone of voice.

Refrain from talking to the person as if he or she were a child or talking as if the person were not there. To help the person focus, minimize background noise by turning off the radio and TV.

Before talking, call the person by name to get his or her attention. Allow ample time for a response, and try not to interrupt.

When the person with Alzheimer’s struggles to communicate a thought or idea, try to gently suggest a word or idea he or she seems to be thinking of.

When asking questions or giving directions, frame them in a positive way.

Meals and eating can be a challenge-some people with Alzheimer’s want to eat too often, whereas others may forget that they should eat. Provide a calm, quiet atmosphere during meals; this can allow the person to focus on eating.

Offer limited choices for meals and serve small portions. Several small meals throughout the day may be a better option than three larger meals.

Using straws or lidded cups may make drinking easier. Finger foods may be easier to handle than utensils, and bowls may be easier to use than plates.

Keeping healthy snacks in a visible place will encourage healthy eating.

See a dentist regularly to keep the person’s mouth and teeth clean and healthy.

Many people with Alzheimer’s become restless, agitated, and irritable at night, usually around dinnertime. This is called “sundowning syndrome,” and some planning might be necessary to ensure that the person goes to bed early and stays in bed through the night.

Encourage physical activity and discourage naps during the day, but allow time for ample rest-fatigue can increase the likelihood of restlessness during the late afternoon and night.

Schedule more physically demanding activities early in the day. Try giving a bath in the morning and having large family meals earlier than normal.

It is important to set a quiet, calm atmosphere in the evening to encourage sleep. Dim the lights, turn off loud sources of noise, and play soothing music if it helps the person.

Encourage sleep at about the same time each night-routine may be helpful.

Refrain from offering the person caffeine during the late afternoon or evening.

Set up nightlights in the person’s room, hall, and bathroom if darkness scares or disorients the person.

Tips for Providing Personal Care

Providing personal care for people with Alzheimer’s, such as bathing, brushing teeth, or dressing, can be difficult. Below are some helpful tips to make personal care easier.

Planning in advance for baths can help if the person with Alzheimer’s finds bathing frightening or confusing.

Schedule baths during the time in which the person seems to be the calmest during the day. Developing a routine may help.

Consider the fact that bathing might be scary or confusing for the person, and respect his or her feelings. Remain calm, gentle, respectful, and patient.

Let the person know which step is coming next, and let him or her perform steps he or she is capable of doing.

Prepare beforehand. Have everything you need in the bathroom and draw the bath before he or she enters.

Consider the temperature. Test the water temperature beforehand, make sure the bathroom is a comfortable temperature, and keep extra towels and robes nearby.

Limit safety risks by using a handheld showerhead, shower bench, grab bars, and non-skid bath mats. Do not leave the person alone in the shower or tub.

A sponge bath may be a good alternative between bathing instead of bathing every day.

Getting dressed may pose a challenge; deciding what to wear, getting certain articles of clothing on and off, and fumbling with zippers and buttons might be difficult. Plan ahead to minimize the confusion and difficulty in this task.

Schedule dressing for the same time each day so the person can get used to having it in his or her routine. Encourage the person to perform as many steps as possible, and plan enough time to allow for difficulty.

Present a few choices of clothing each day, and if the person has a favorite outfit, you may want to consider purchasing multiple sets.

Lay out the clothes in the order they should be put on to help the person move through the process more easily.

Provide clear, step-by-step instructions if the person is having difficulty.

Pick out clothing that is comfortable, easy to get on and off, and easy to care for. Clothes with elastic waists and Velcro will eliminate problems with buttons, zippers, and tying. Take note of discomfort from tight clothes or pricking from a safety pin. The person may become irritable for seemingly no reason, but painful clothing might be the cause.

With the progression of Alzheimer’s, many people may become incontinent (lose control over their bowels or bladder). This can be upsetting for the person with Alzheimer’s and is sometimes a sign of physical illness. Be sure to discuss this with a doctor.

Develop a routine for taking the person to the bathroom and follow it as closely as possible. You may want to guide the person to the bathroom every few hours, for example. Do not wait for the person to ask or tell you.

Notice signs of the person having to go to the bathroom, like restlessness or tugging on clothing. Respond to these signs quickly.

Try to be understanding and considerate when accidents occur. Remain calm and reassure the person if he or she is upset or frustrated by it. Keep track of when accidents occur, and try to plan ways to avoid them.

Preventing nighttime wetting may include limiting certain types of drinks later in the day, such as drinks with caffeine. If you plan on taking the person out, be aware of where bathrooms are located and have the person dress in clothing that is easily removable. Bring along an extra change of clothes in case of an accident.

Residential Care

Many caregivers eventually find that it is too difficult to continue providing in home care. When this happens, the person with Alzheimer’s will have to live in a place where care is provided at all hours of the day and night. Two types of residential care are available: assisted living and skilled nursing facilities.

Assisted living homes are set up in large apartment or hotel-like buildings or as a “board and care” home for a small group of residents. Each offers a different level of care, but most include meals, recreation, security, and help with bathing, dressing, medication, and housekeeping.

Conversely, skilled nursing facilities (also referred to as nursing homes) include 24-hour services and monitoring. They are able to provide medical care and rehabilitation for people who are very frail or are going through the later stages of dementia.

Health care providers sometimes provide different levels of care at a single site. This is called a “continuing care community,” and it is set up as two buildings, usually next to each other, to allow for ease of movement between assisted living and skilled nursing facilities. Some of these communities have programs for couples when one spouse is fairly healthy and the other is disabled.

Choosing a facility can be a difficult decision to make. Collecting information about services and options in anticipation of the need to relocate can be helpful in giving you time to weigh the options and choose the facility that best meets your needs.

Doctors, friends, relatives, social workers, and religious organizations may be able to help you locate nearby facilities. If you are looking for a facility farther away, it may be useful to hire a professional care manager to help you figure out specific care needs and identify community resources.

Compose a list of questions for the staff of each facility. This might include questions about what is offered at the facilities, such as activities, transportation, or units specifically for people with Alzheimer’s. Contact the residences you are interested in, and make an appointment to visit. Talk to as many people as possible while you are there, including administration, nursing staff, and residents. Take note of how the facility is run and how the residents are treated. Dropping by unannounced might also be a good idea to ensure that your first impressions were correct.

Do some research to determine whether each facility has Alzheimer’s-specific programs and services. You may want to ask whether the staff is trained in dementia care and if the facility allows family participation in planning personal care.

Other things you may want to consider are room availability, cost and payment method, and participation in Medicare or Medicaid. If there is a waiting list, you may want to put your name on it even if you are not completely ready to make a decision about long-term care. When you do make a decision, be sure to understand all of the terms of the contract, including the financial agreement. Looking over the documents with a lawyer before you sign may be helpful.

Relocating will cause a substantial change for the person with Alzheimer’s as well as the caregiver. Working with a caregiver can help you plan for and adjust to the move. Having a support system is important during this time.

Making visits to people with Alzheimer’s is very important, even though they may not remember who the visitors are. The value lies in human connection and social activity. Some ideas for people who are planning a visit to a person with Alzheimer’s disease are the following:

Visit at a time of the day when the person is at his or her best. You may want to bring an activity to do, such as a familiar book to read or a family photo album to browse, but be prepared to give up the activity if necessary.

Remain calm and quiet. Try not to use a loud tone of voice, and refrain from talking to the person as if he or she were a child. Be considerate of the person’s personal space, and try not to get too close if he or she seems uncomfortable.

Make eye contact and call the person by name to get his or her attention. Remind the person of who you are if he or she does not remember you.

Do not argue with the person if he or she is confused. Respond to the feelings being communicated, and subtly distract the person by bringing up a different topic if necessary.

Try not to take it personally if the person does not recognize you, acts unkindly, or responds angrily. The disease causes confusion that the person is responding to; it is not your fault.

Safety Issues

It is very important to consider safety when caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease. Accidents are possible even if plans are made and adhered to. A couple ways to minimize dangerous situations are making sure your home is safe and preventing the person from wandering or driving when skills decline.

Home Safety

People who are providing home care for senior citizens with Alzheimer’s must examine their homes thoroughly to identify and change possibly dangerous objects or setups. The creation of a safe environment can minimize dangerous, stressful situations. Here are some things to do when preparing to provide in home care:

Put in secure locks on outside doors and windows, especially if the person tends to wander. Install a keyed deadbolt or additional lock higher or lower on the door. A new latch or lock might help if the person can open the door due to its familiarity to him or her. Conversely, removing locks on bathroom doors will ensure that the person does not accidentally lock him or herself into the bathroom.

Install childproof latches on kitchen cabinets and cupboards as well as places where you keep cleaning supplies and other chemicals.

Make sure medications are labeled and locked away. Keep dangerous objects like knives, lighters, matches, and guns out of reach. Put away and secure anything that poses a threat to safety, both inside and out.

Maintain a tidy, well-lit environment. Remove scatter rugs or other objects that might cause the person to slip and fall.

Think about installing an automatic shut-off switch for your stove to minimize the risk of burns or fire.

If the person goes out, make sure he or she is carrying identification and is wearing a medical bracelet. If he or she becomes lost and cannot effectively communicate, this will let people know the person’s identity and alert them as to his or her medical condition. Make sure to have a recent picture or video of the person in case he or she gets lost.

Ensuring safety is one of the most important tasks of caregiving. People with Alzheimer’s sometimes wander away from their homes and caregivers, so knowing what to do to prevent wandering is of utmost importance.

Driving

After making the difficult decision that someone with Alzheimer’s is no longer capable of driving, sharing the decision with that person should be done carefully and sensitively. The person may become upset, but it is extremely important to consider his or her safety as well as the safety of others on the road. Here are some ideas to help you decide whether someone with Alzheimer’s should no longer drive and to guide your communication with that person:

Look out for signs that the person can no longer drive safely, such as becoming disoriented in familiar places, driving too fast or slow, not heeding traffic signs, or becoming angry or confused.

When you tell the person about your decision, try to be sensitive to the person’s feelings, but remain firm in your request that he or she not drive. It is also important to be consistent when you have made a decision-even on a “good day,” do not let the person drive.

Ask for help from a doctor. The doctor may be seen as more of an authority figure, and the person may be more willing to stop driving. The doctor may be willing to write a “prescription” to stop driving as well as to call the Department of Motor Vehicles to request a reevaluation of the person’s driving ability.

If it becomes necessary, take away the car keys. If holding onto keys is important to the person, substitute a different set of keys.

If nothing else seems to be working, you may want to disable the car or move it to a place where the person can no longer see it or access it.

Caregiver Support

When learning that a loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, you may become stressed, frightened, and overwhelmed. Some helpful tips for dealing with the new diagnosis are listed below.

Ask the doctor questions you have about Alzheimer’s, including which treatments might be the most useful in alleviating the symptoms or controlling behavioral problems.

Certain community groups offer classes to teach caregiving problem solving and management techniques.

Locate a support group where you can talk about your concerns and emotions. Fellow members might have ideas and resources to share based on their own experiences. If you would like to find a support group but would rather stay at home, there are many support groups online.

Map out your schedule in order to identify times in which you can create a normal routine to make activities run more smoothly. If certain times of the day are better for the person with Alzheimer’s in terms of behavior and emotions, try to plan your schedule to make the most of those times with the person. The person’s behavior may change from day to day, so be prepared to be flexible and change your schedule as needed.

Think about using adult day care or in home health care services to allow time for your own relaxation. By using these services, you can have a break from the demands of caregiving while knowing that the person is safe and cared for.

Try to plan ahead. This may mean collecting financial and legal documents, exploring long-term care options, and figuring out which services are covered by health insurance and Medicare.

Now that the United States has passed health care reform, many people are wondering what this means for them. Here is a general overview of changes that will be coming within the first year of the health care reform’s passage.

First, additional rules will be put in force to regulate insurance companies. The insurance companies can no longer drop people purely because they get sick, and limits on your health care expenses over your lifetime have been removed. In addition, children con no longer be barred from receiving medical insurance because they have a preexisting condition, and people under the age of 26 are now allowed to stay on their parents health insurance plans. These programs serve as ways to resolve issues with insurance companies offering insurance only until you actually get sick.

The next area of the bill for this year is the expansion of medicare benefits. Medicare drug users will find that they receive a $250 payment to cover a portion of the out of pocket expenses when they spend between $2,700 and $6,154 (an area of coverage that is currently exposed). While adults aged 55 to 64 will not be covered by medicare in the first year, they will be instated into a temporary insurance program until 2014.

Finally, the new bill will place a ten percent tax on tanning services that use ultraviolet lamps. Many people find themselves confused by this piece of legislation, but the rationale is that these services cause long term health effects and so, they should pay a portion of the costs.

While the bill has significantly further reaching impact than this, these are the changes that will go into effect in the first year.

Many people are under the impression that under Obama’s health plan they no longer need to go out and get health cover and the government will take care of it for you. This is far from the truth and you still need to get health cover yourself.

When you start looking for cheaper health insurance you need to make sure you compare the policies carefully, especially now with the changed in the healthcare system.

the best way to to do this is to compare them and make sure you understand them.

#1. Read the details of the plan carefully, so you do not get any nasty surprises when you need treatment and you know exactly what is covered.

#2. Start a HSA with the health care insurance company. This account is free of taxes and can be used to cover you expenses if need be. Don’t get tempted by a low premium and high deductible medical costs.

What’s more, you should consider a policy that has a disability insurance included. This feature is important if you get seriously ill or hurt and you cannot work anymore. In most cases health insurance has this included and more and more individual policies are beginning to provide this extra feature as well.

#3. Many people are getting really discouraged by having to take out insurance now. With the Obama health plan you now have no choice and if you do not take out a health plan you will face fines. That is the bad news. There is some good news though and this will work in your favor.

Insurance companies are no longer allowed to turn away people with pre-existing conditions. This means you do not have to stay with the same company who will continue hiking their charges and you have to continue paying up. Now you can look at alternative insurers.

If you are looking for cheaper health insurance you do not have to worry about a cap on your cover. Many insurers have capped payouts and cover and hidden this in the small print. This is no longer allowed under Obama’s health plan.

If you are looking for cheaper health insurance now is the time to get it, before health companies start to find ways round these changes and start hiking their prices again. If you want cheaper health cover the best you can do is to compare prices on the internet and find cover that is affordable for you.
